Meet the Team
Dr. Michael Portz and Dr. Janet Wade are Optometrists serving Red Oak, IA and surrounding communities.
Dr. Michael Portz
Dr. Michael J. Portz grew up in Atlantic, Iowa, and attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He graduated magna cum laude from the Southern California College of Optometry in 1979. After graduation he started working part-time in a private practice in Orange, CA, and he was a full-time instructor at the College of Optometry. In 1981 he returned to Iowa and joined the practice of Dr. Ronald Mills. He purchased the business in 1991 and has continued to practice full-time in Red Oak.
His professional interests are family practice, diagnosis and treatment of eye disease, surgical comanagement and contact lenses. Memberships include the American Optometric Association, the Iowa Optometric Association and he is a Fellow in the American Academy of Optometry. Dr. Portz is a Past-President of the Iowa Optometric Association (2001-02) and he was appointed to the Iowa Board of Optometry by Governor Terry Branstad in 2011.
Dr. Portz is married to his wife, Joyce. He is involved in local civic and church organizations including the Performing Arts and Education Association of southwest Iowa, St. Mary's church and the Montgomery County Family YMCA. He enjoys golf, tennis, biking, community theater and he sings with the Southwest Iowa Concert Chorale.
Dr. Janet Wade
Dr. Janet Wade graduated from the University of South Dakota, University of Nebraska-Omaha, and Midland Lutheran College. She was a registered nurse for 15 years, working at various hospitals and outpatient settings in Omaha, NE. She graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1996. Upon returning to Omaha, she worked in both commercial and private optometry practices in the city. She and her husband, Ken, moved to rural Mills county Iowa in 2003. Dr. Wade joined Dr. Portz in Red Oak in 2005. She is a member of the Iowa Optometric Association. In addition, she is a member of the Red Oak Lions Club, on the board for the YES Mentoring in Red Oak, the board of Mills County Farm Bureau, and a 4-H club leader.
Dr. Portz and Dr. Wade enjoy caring for their patients and look forward to the one-on-one interaction involved with solving eye health and vision problems. Dr. Portz, Dr. Wade, and the entire staff are 100 percent committed to providing first class eye care services.
Our Staff
Our staff is well trained and focused on making your patient experience a personal one. All members of our staff attend continuing education classes throughout the year in areas of spectacle lenses, contact lenses and eyewear design.
